Strengthening Mental Health & Wellbeing in Primary Schools
ACHPER SA, in collaboration with Flinders University, is hosting a Professional Development day for primary school teachers, school counsellors, and wellbeing leaders aimed at strengthening mental health and wellbeing in primary schools.
The primary years are a critical period for developing foundational mental health literacy, emotional regulation skills, and positive help-seeking behaviours. Within the Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum, mental health outcomes are explicitly embedded in the Personal, Social, and Community Health strand.
Big Talks for Little People is a mental health education program designed to equip primary-aged students with the language, concepts, and strategies needed to understand wellbeing and manage emotions. Notably, trial data from the Schools Program demonstrated a significant reduction in bullying and harassment following student participation.
This session explores how the program can be meaningfully integrated into your primary school HPE lessons to enhance students’ personal and social capabilities while supporting whole-school wellbeing priorities.
